
The first thing Nolan Haskell learned about Fort Stockton was that nobody there was in a hurry to be impressed.
That wasn’t criticism.
It was survival.
People who lived in places where the nearest major city was measured in hours instead of minutes had developed a healthy skepticism toward promises. The desert itself encouraged such behavior. Clouds promised rain and frequently delivered disappointment. Politicians promised highways and frequently delivered studies. Salesmen promised the future and frequently delivered gadgets that wound up collecting dust in a closet.
West Texas had a way of stripping the paint off exaggeration.
That was precisely why Nolan Haskell wound up there in the spring of 1955.
Officially, he worked for Texas Instruments out of Dallas as a Product Demonstration Specialist. Unofficially, he drove around Texas trying to convince ordinary people that a tiny object nobody had ever heard of was about to change their lives.
Even he wasn’t entirely certain he believed it.
He was thirty-eight years old, six feet one inch tall, lean from years behind the wheel, and carried himself with the casual confidence of a man who’d spent half his life watching horizons come and go through windshields. His surname came from Haskell County, a fact he enjoyed because it sounded permanent while he himself was almost never in one place for more than two nights.
That Tuesday morning he was standing outside a motel in Odessa admiring what had become his favorite traveling companion.
The company demonstrator.
A 1954 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Starfire convertible.
Not transportation.
A declaration.
The thing was absurdly beautiful. Polar White over Cadet Blue, nearly nineteen feet long, with enough chrome to make the sun work overtime. The bullet taillights looked ready to depart for Mars. The hood ornament resembled an airplane caught in the act of taking off. Every line on the car seemed to suggest movement, even while parked. General Motors had clearly employed a room full of designers who believed the future would involve jetpacks and moon colonies.
Nolan rather admired that.
He circled the car every morning before driving away.
A ritual.
The wraparound windshield still impressed him. The chrome rocker moldings. The white top folded neatly beneath its blue boot. The downturned exhaust pipe. The broad shoulders over the rear wheels.
The Starfire did not permit anonymous behavior.
You could slip quietly into town in a Plymouth Plaza or a Chevrolet 150. A Starfire announced itself three blocks before arrival.
That turned out to be useful.
He opened the hood before leaving, something he always did out of habit. There sat Oldsmobile’s Rocket 324 cubic inch V8 with its enormous bat-wing air cleaner perched atop the four-barrel carburetor like some mechanical bird preparing for migration. One hundred eighty-five horsepower. Three hundred pound-feet of torque. Hydraulic lifters. Smoothness that bordered on arrogance.
The engineers at Oldsmobile had named it Rocket for a reason.
In 1955, America had become infatuated with the sky.
Everybody wanted to go farther.
Faster.
Higher.
The irony wasn’t lost on Nolan.
Because inside his leather briefcase sat something trying to accomplish exactly the same thing.
Four Regency TR-1 transistor radios.
Black.
Bone white.
Cloud gray.
Mandarin red.
Each wrapped carefully in towels because fifty dollars was enough money to make a person nervous. Fifty dollars could buy groceries. Fifty dollars could pay utility bills. Fifty dollars could purchase a pair of boots and leave enough left over for a steak dinner.
A person didn’t accidentally buy a Regency TR-1.
A person committed to it.
He climbed into the Oldsmobile and settled into the teal, blue, and white interior that looked more expensive than some hotel lobbies. The seats were broad enough to qualify as furniture. The padded dashboard curved around him like an aircraft cockpit. Power windows sat waiting at his fingertips. The Autronic Eye headlight dimmer occupied its perch atop the dashboard. The giant steering wheel practically invited a man to steer with one finger.
The Rocket V8 came to life.
He smiled.
The car never started.
It awakened.
There was a difference.

Nolan headed south toward Fort Stockton beneath a sky so large it made ordinary thoughts seem undersized. West Texas unfolded around him in layers. Mesquite. Telephone poles. Windmills. Pump jacks nodding lazily toward the earth.
Distance was the true geography of the region.
Everything else was secondary.
People from Dallas measured life in blocks. West Texans measured life in hours. Children rode school buses longer than some easterners commuted to work. A doctor might live forty miles away. A football rival might live seventy miles away.
Distance was not an inconvenience.
It was a neighbor.
Near Monahans, Nolan reached over and turned on one of the TR-1 radios sitting beside him on the seat. Music drifted out of the tiny speaker while the Rocket V8 hummed beneath the hood. The novelty of the thing still delighted him.
He was listening to a radio smaller than a sandwich.
That had never happened before.
Anywhere.
Bell Labs had invented the transistor in 1947, but it had spent years hidden away inside laboratories and military equipment. The public had never really encountered one. Vacuum tubes still ruled consumer electronics. Tubes were cheap. Tubes were familiar. Tubes were understood.
Transistors were expensive.
Transistors were strange.
Texas Instruments had no desire to become a radio manufacturer. Their plan was simpler and far more ambitious. Sell enough transistors to drive demand upward and prices downward. If transistors became affordable, every industry in America would find uses for them.
The Regency TR-1 was merely the opening act.
Nobody knew it yet.
Nolan drove another hour and Fort Stockton appeared like an oasis of determination sitting in the middle of endless country.
The town seemed to have arrived there through stubbornness alone.
He immediately liked it.

There was a courthouse. A scattering of storefronts. A motor court. Gas stations. Businesses that existed because they were needed rather than because someone thought they might become fashionable.
Fashion had a difficult time surviving in West Texas.
Utility won almost every argument.
Nolan parked along Dickinson Boulevard and shut off the engine.
The Rocket V8 settled into silence with a series of metallic ticks.
He sat there for a moment and laughed quietly.
The Oldsmobile occupied nineteen feet of pavement.
The transistor radio occupied his shirt pocket.
America was somehow becoming larger and smaller at exactly the same time.
Nobody seemed to notice.
He checked into the Comanche Motor Hotel and walked downtown carrying a cloud gray TR-1.

The first person who noticed him was a rancher seated outside a drugstore.
The second person was another rancher.
The third was also a rancher.
West Texas possessed a certain efficiency.
One of them pointed toward Nolan’s pocket.
“What’s that?”
“A radio.”
The three men laughed simultaneously.
Nolan turned it on.
Music spilled into the afternoon air.
The laughter stopped immediately.
One of the men leaned closer.
“I’ll be damned.”
That sentence became the soundtrack for the remainder of the day.

People gathered in small clusters. A barber. A waitress. A pharmacist. An oilfield mechanic with grease permanently embedded in his hands. They passed the radio around carefully, each person turning it over as if searching for hidden machinery.
“Where are the tubes?”
“There aren’t any.”
“Then what’s inside?”
“Transistors.”
Nobody knew what that meant.
So Nolan explained. Bell Labs in 1947. Texas Instruments in Dallas. Industrial Development Engineering Associates. Four germanium transistors. Twenty-two-and-a-half volt battery. Twenty to thirty hours of operation. Four milliamps of current draw. Superheterodyne circuitry. CONELRAD frequencies marked at 640 and 1240 kilohertz in case of emergency.
People listened politely.
Then a woman asked the right question.
She taught fifth grade.
“My father ranches near Sanderson,” she said. “Why should I care?”
Nolan smiled.
That was the question.
Not because he hadn’t prepared an answer, but because it was the only question that mattered.
He took a moment before speaking.
“How long does it take him to drive into town?”
She shrugged.
“Almost an hour.”
“And if he’s fixing fence?”
“Longer.”
“And if he’s by himself all day?”
She paused.
Then she understood.
“Oh.”
The crowd understood with her.
That was the moment the transistor radio ceased being a novelty.
It became company.
The woman nodded slowly.
“My father could carry this with him.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“He wouldn’t have to wait until supper to know what was happening.”
“No ma’am.”
She smiled.
Then she said something Nolan never forgot.

“You’ve made the world shorter.”
That sentence stayed with him.
All afternoon.
All evening.
Even after he drove out to the edge of town and parked beneath a moonlit sky.
The top was down.
The desert air was cool.
Silver moonlight danced across the white hood and illuminated the hood ornament.
He sat in silence.
Then looked around the cabin.
Power steering.
Power brakes.
Power windows.
Pushbutton radio.
Autronic Eye.
The Starfire represented every luxury America could imagine in 1954.
America had confidently assumed tomorrow would always become bigger.
Bigger cars.
Bigger highways.
Bigger engines.
The transistor quietly disagreed.
Tomorrow would become smaller too.
Smaller radios.
Smaller telephones.
Smaller computers.
Smaller cameras.
He didn’t know those things for certain.
He could simply feel them approaching.
He looked at Fort Stockton in the distance.
Hundreds of miles from Dallas.
Hundreds from Houston.
Hundreds from almost everything.
Yet somehow connected.
The realization arrived gently.
The Rocket V8 and the transistor were trying to solve the same problem.
Distance.
The Rocket conquered physical distance.
The transistor conquered informational distance.
Both were distance machines.

And Fort Stockton, perhaps more than anywhere else in Texas, instinctively understood the value of shortening a long road.
He sat there another hour listening to stations drift across the speaker. Static. Music. Voices from hundreds of miles away. The world introducing itself one signal at a time.
Then he smiled.
There beneath a West Texas sky sat one of the largest passenger cars in America carrying one of the smallest consumer products America had ever built.
And somehow they belonged together.
Progress was rarely elegant.
Sometimes it arrived with laboratories.
Sometimes it arrived with oilfields.
Sometimes it arrived with rockets.
Sometimes it arrived with radios.
Occasionally, if history was feeling generous, it arrived with both at once.
Then it parked for the night in Fort Stockton.
Years later the roads would widen. Interstates would replace highways. Computers would appear. Radios would become telephones and telephones would become cameras and cameras would become libraries that fit inside a shirt pocket.
But that evening in 1955, none of those futures had names yet.
There was only a giant Oldsmobile Starfire convertible.
A tiny Regency transistor radio.
A man named Nolan Haskell.
And a desert town quietly deciding whether tomorrow was worth believing in.
As it turned out, it was.
Fort Stockton simply wanted proof first.
It usually does.

Texas Instruments was in business, and changing mindsets, back in 1955?
Thanks for the story, Captain…it sent me down a mental rabbit hole I hadn’t visited for quite a while. All the way back to my high school years, with math geeks roaming the halls, blue vinyl “denim” carrying cases attached to their belts with the built-in strap, housing their TI-30 calculator. Ready and willing to find a square root or trig function with just a push of a button.
And in the late 1950s/early 1960s, we still had the leather belt-hanger with our Post Versalog.
The TI-30 gave entry into changing the world, or at least access toward change, and in a way, so did the Rocket 88. The trombone player in our band had a 1949 fastback Olds 88 with Hydro-Matic, and wow, could that appear to run circles around my ’49 Pontiac straight-8 stick shift convertible –
but the girls preferred mine!
Captain, I forgot, were you/are you a teacher?
What percent of vacant-gazed-eyes kids ever get a sparkle of forever-motivation?
I was. English, History, and Business.
The percentage of students who got ‘The Sparkle’ was directly proportional to the size of the challenge they were given to push themselves out of their comfort zone and see just what they were capable of. The higher the expectations, the more opportunity to sparkle.
The Starfire is an impressive cruiser. If we didn’t already have our 1954 Cadillac convertible, that would be a sweet alternative. Drop the top, bring up some 50s music on your transistor radio, and cruise America
